If you’ve found me you’ve found a being that lives in that unusual space where the technology and art meld together. Writing software is not only a logical endevor but an artistic one as well. And a musician is not just an artist but someone who brings structure to chaos. As a software engineer and a musician i live on both sides of that line, blending the two together.
I have always been drawn to modern technology, specifically computers, networking, and especially the Internet. When I signed up for my first dial-up account in 1994 the web browser was NCSA Mosaic, and most of the internet was not graphical, with FTP, Gopher, Usenet, IRC, and Telnet being the protocols most used. As the internet evolved so did I, jumping on the expanding modern high-speed accesses of ADSL and DOCSIS cable connections as soon as they were available to me. Since registering my domain name in 1999, I have self hosted most if not all of of my domain, including Web, E-Mail, game servers, DNS, and even reverse DNS at times. I have hosted on a variety of operating system, including Windows 2000, MacOS server, and a variety of Linux flavors, such as Slackware, Gentoo, Redhat, and Ubuntu. I continue hosting many of these systems today utilizing modern technologies such as Docker and AWS. I am also a software engineer. Being self-taught early on, I worked as a self-employed contractor in software engineering before going to college to earn my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I have been working as a full time engineer, and now an engineering manager since graduation in 2007.
Music is the other part of the universe intertwined with my existence. Having shown a connection to music at a young age, that connection was shown to have some talent behind it. As I grew and matured, music keeps being a core part of my existance. I grew up playing violin and piano, and since graduating college I have spent 15-ish years learning and growing as a live sound engineer, and in the last couple years I have started playing electric bass guitar as part of a band. People close to me always see me listening to, singing, or humming music most moments of the day.
Tightly coupled with my draw toward the Internet is online gaming. Starting with dial-in BBS MUDs, the Internet opened the door to a large world where people could easily come together in online gaming to achieve goals. PvP style games, such as Doom, Descent, Quake, Unreal, and Halo opened the door to people from across the world coming together in their arenas, my draw has been drawn toward the team focused games, from the original Team Fortress and Counterstrike, to the online MMORPGs being an avid player of Ultima Online, Everquest 1 and 2, Destiny, and still playing World of Warcraft even today. Music has also been part of my gaming experiences, being a fan the Bemani series games (Guitar Mania, Beatmania, IIDx, Dance Dance Revolution) and Harmonix’s Rock Band.
People always ask themselves and others, ‘what is the meaning of life?’ To me that answer has aways been ‘to experience it.’. I have always tried to find the experiences that most do not try to follow, and try to see things that most do not get to see; I am a PADI certified scuba diver, a general aviation private pilot, and hope to be able to see all the gems of the world usually hidden from view. My hope is to be able to visit all continents of the world at least once in my lifetime, including Antarctica.
Thanks for stopping by and see you out in the world!
